CICDE Celebrates the International Roma Day with the First Electoral Comics in the Romani Language
Date: 08.04.2020

Today, 8 April, is the International Roma Day. It aims to celebrate Roma culture and to raise awareness of the problems they encounter. To this end, the Centre for Continuous Electoral Training makes efforts every year to inform Roma communities in Moldova about the electoral process and to make them aware of the fact that #Democracy_is_Learned, and #EveryVoteCounts.

The Centre for Continuous Electoral Training supports the efforts of full integration and belonging of the Roma community to the entire range of democratic and social values, especially the right to vote and to be elected according to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova and the Electoral Code.

Also this year, CICDE translated into Romani the first electoral comics for children so that they would learn from early childhood about the importance of voting and civic participation in the public life of Moldova and their communities.

Until 17 April 2020, CICDE is conducting an electoral vlogging contest. Children aged 7-11 years have the opportunity to take part therein by recording a video of 1.5-3 min. on the basis of ‘Arci at the Polling Station’ comics, accessible in five languages: Romanian, Russian, Gagauz, Romani, and Ukrainian.

The idea to celebrate the International Roma Day emerged in 1971, on the occasion of the first World Romani Congress organised in London. In Eastern European countries, including Moldova, the Roma day is celebrated on 8 April since 1990.
